Sunday Morning Bonus Pulp: Marvel Science Stories, April-May 1939

There are only two stories in this issue of MARVEL SCIENCE STORIES, one by John Taine and the other by Harl Vincent. I know both names, but I don't think I've ever read anything by either of those authors. Maybe someone can tell me about them. In the meantime, I'll just look at that Norman Saunders cover, thank you.

Barely read either so far...what little was OK. Nice terse titles.

Dover reprinted some of Taine's SF in the '60s. I read the omnibus collection of THE TIME STREAM, THE GREATEST ADVENTURE, and THE PURPLE SAPPHIRE years ago. I don't remember more than that THE TIME STREAM was a time-travel novel that struck me, back then, as written in an old-fashioned style, THE GREATEST ADVENTURE was a lost world story about dinosaurs found in a hidden world in Antarctica (seems to me there was a twist plot-element that the dinos were unknown species that may have been cloned by some vanished civilization), and THE PURPLE SAPPHIRE was a lost-race story in Central Asia with SF overtones. Ace also reprinted GREATEST ADVENTURE in the early '60s. James, my imperfectly remembered impression was that the novels were literate, probably several cuts above much of the stuff that they competed with in the Gernsback era, but no great shakes.

Echo Mr. Glosser, I read a bunch of Taine years ago. Well written but not very exciting. I liked them but definitely nothing memorable.

Read some of Taine, I think, though I don't know anything about him
